All State Chorus

All State Chorus Information

The purpose of Georgia All-State Chorus is to provide Georgia choral students (grades 7-12) an opportunity to rehearse and perform with a large group of singers who have demonstrated advanced skills in the areas of singing and music reading and to work with a renowned conductor.
 
The All-State Chorus Event will take place on February 27-29, 2020 at the Classic Center in Athens, Georgia. 
 
In order to attend the event, students must pass two district level auditions. Parents are responsible for their child’s transportation to both auditions and the event.

  1. The first audition will take place on November 9, 2019 at TBA location. Students will be notified of audition times and location closer to the event date.


  • The 1st audition will consist of a prepared solo, scales and sight-reading. We will work on sight-reading and scales in class, but students must make an appointment with Mr. Tolar before/after school for individual help preparing a solo for the audition.  Mr. Tolar highly encourages those auditioning to sign up for voice lessons with a private teacher.  See Mr. Tolar for a list of available voice lesson instructors.   


  1. If the first audition is passed, the student will attend a second audition at North Springs High School on Thursday, January 16, 2020 after school.

  • At the second audition, the student will perform the All-State Chorus music for two judges and must pass with 70% accuracy or better. Those achieving 100% accuracy will receive a seal of distinction on their All-State certificate. Mr. Tolar will also be available before school for extra help.

 
The cost to audition is $25. This fee must be paid (accompanied by the All-State Application) no later than September 13, 2019. No late applications will be accepted.  Payment will be made through the OSP Online Payment System under the heading Chorus-All State Audition Fee.  If you decide not to audition after September 13, your money will not be refunded.
 
Additional expenses to the students who make All-State will include the purchase of music (approximately $20), rehearsal CD ($25) an acceptance fee ($15), hotel, travel and meal expenses in Athens.
 
Performance attire for All State Event: Girls must wear a floor length black skirt, black blouse with sleeves (sleeve length does not matter, no sleeveless) or a dress meeting these requirements with black shoes. (note – the RTMS formal choral uniform meets all these requirements). Boys must wear black pants, a long sleeved, button down black shirt, black bowtie, black shoes and black socks. School clothes may be worn for all rehearsals.
 
 
Parents will be responsible for transportation for their own child during the All-State event in Athens. You may drive back and forth each day, but the rehearsal schedule is early morning to late evening.

District V Solo and Ensemble

District V Solo & Ensemble Auditions

The purpose of Solo and Ensemble Performance Evaluation is:

  • To promote the development of musical knowledge as expressed in performance through evaluation, advice and suggestion;

  • To raise the standards of musicianship, instrumentation, technical knowledge, and literature selection of performers.

 
There is no limit to the number of students each school may send to the Solo and Ensemble Event.
 
The Solo and Ensemble Performance Evaluation will take place on Saturday, October 26th at Johns Creek United Methodist Church.
 
Parents will be responsible for their child’s transportation to and from the audition. Audition times will be published as soon as they are available.
 
The cost to audition is $10. This fee must be paid (accompanied by the Solo and Ensemble Application) no later than Wednesday, August 30, 2019. Payment will be processed through OSP (Online School Payment) on the RTMS website under the heading Chorus- District V Solo and Ensemble Fee.  If you decide not to audition after September 4th, your money will not be refunded.
 
Students may perform the All State solo for this competition. Or, if students are in private voice lessons, they may perform a solo they are working on with their private teacher. Students must provide their own accompaniment at the audition, or work with Mr. Tolar to secure an accompanist. This could be an accompaniment CD, or a live accompanist.  If students choose to perform the All State solo, Mr. Tolar can provide an accompaniment CD for the audition – please ask ahead of time.  If choosing to provide a CD accompaniment, the STUDENT MUST PROVIDE THE SPEAKER/CD PLAYER AS WELL.
 
Pop/Broadway/Country music is not appropriate for this evaluation experience.
 
Scores of all music performed, including the accompaniment part, must be furnished to each judge. Each score must have measures numbered. Photocopied scores may be used ONLY if a letter from the publisher or vendor is attached stating that the music is on order or is presently out of print. This letter must be dated at least 14 days prior to the first day of the event in question.
 
Performance attire: Performance appropriate attire – No jeans, torn clothing, sneakers, etc.

District V Honor Choir

District V Honor Chorus Information

The purpose of District Honor Chorus is to provide GMEA District V Choral students (grades 4-12) an opportunity to rehearse and perform with a large group of singers who have demonstrated advanced skills in the areas of singing and musicianship and to work with a renowned conductor.
 
Each middle school is allowed to send three SAB trios from 7th and 8th grade and seven singers with unchanged voices from 6th Grade.  Schools are also allowed to list several alternates who will be notified by October 1 if they are invited to attend.
 

  • The District V Honor Chorus Event will take place on October 25-26, 2019.  The location is Johns Creek United Methodist Church.

 

  • Parents will be responsible for their child’s transportation during the event, including providing lunch both days.

 

  • Rehearsals will be all day Friday, beginning at 9:30 am and ending at 5:30pm with a lunch break from 12-1:30. Saturday rehearsal will begin at 8:30am. Lunch will be from 12-2:30 during which the student should change into concert attire. The concert will be Saturday afternoon at 3:15pm in the sanctuary.   

  • In order to attend the event, students must audition for Mr. Tolar.  Students must bring the audition form signed by a parent to the audition.   Auditions will be held in the chorus room on August 27th at 4:15pm. For the audition, students will sing their part on a song we are working on in class.  Audition results will be posted that afternoon.

 

  • The cost to attend is $50. This fee must be paid no later than Wednesday, September 11, 2019.Payment will be made through the OSP (Online School Payment) system under the heading Chorus-District V Honor Chorus Application Fee. This fee includes the honor chorus music, an honor chorus folder and rehearsal recordings, all yours to keep after the event.

6th Grade Statewide Honor Chorus

6th Grade Statewide Honor Chorus Information

The purpose of 6th Grade Statewide Honor Chorus is to provide selected students the opportunity to work with other students of equal caliber under the direction of highly qualified master conductors and musicians. Selection to Sixth Grade Statewide Honor Chorus recognizes excellence in musical knowledge, technique and interpretation.  Each school is allowed to send FOUR 6th grade students with unchanged voices, male or female. 
 

  • In order to attend the event, students must audition for Mr. Tolar.  Students must bring the audition form signed by a parent to the audition.   Auditions will be held in the chorus room on Friday, September 13th from 7:45-8:30am.  For the audition, students will sing their part on a song we are working on in class.  Audition results will be posted that afternoon in the chorus room. 

*Parents will be responsible for chaperoning their own child during the entire event.*  
 

  • The cost to attend 6th Grade Statewide Honor chorus is $75.  This includes the registration fee, music and rehearsal tracks.  Music is yours to keep after the event.

 

  • If your child is selected please send acceptance form and payment no later than Friday, September 20th, 2019. Payment can be made through the OSP (Online School Payment) system with the heading Chorus-6th grade honor chorus fee.

 

Additional expenses to the students who are selected to attend will include hotel, travel and meal expenses in Athens, GA.  It is also your responsibility to provide appropriate performance attire.  

Performance attire: Ladies will wear a floor-length black dress with sleeves or jacket, OR floor-length black skirt and black blouse with sleeves or jacket, OR floor-length black pants and black blouse with sleeves or jacket. Blouses will hang below the waist of a skirt or pants by 3 inches. Also, all ladies are to wear black shoes that completely encompass the foot. Flip flops or sandals of any kind present a safety issue when maneuvering steps or risers and are not acceptable attire.
